Stake and Strand Style
A stake and strand basket is made by inserting rigid willow rods (the’stake’ material) around thinner flexible willow rods (the’strand’ material) and then woven together into a base, around which the sides are built up. Handles can then be added if required. More info : https://www.amishbaskets.com/collections/custom-made-baskets-hand-woven-by-the-amish
Crowning the base
Once the sides are woven, the base of the basket is crowned, which gives it a rim and makes it stronger and more attractive. To do this, each upright stake is ‘kinked’ – meaning it is bent at exactly the right angle to give it a flat or concave underside.
Creating a 3 rod wale
The 3 rod wale is a common technique in willow basket making and involves weaving with three similar rods; one in each end, inserted a couple of inches deep into the weave on the left hand side of three consecutive uprights, as shown. As you progress through the basket, you will weave each rod in a different position and will need to ensure that you are spacing them evenly as you go. If you have any trouble with the spacing, you can always use a ‘bodkin‘ – a simple pointed tool used by basket makers to separate the weave when it is too thick or tight.
